Ag in the Classroom is an educational program designed to provide teachers with quality materials to teach students, through North Carolina competency-based lessons, about the sources of their food and fiber, and the importance of agriculture to the economy. The mission of Ag in the Classroom is to provide quality materials and instruction to public and private school teachers enabling them to instill in students an appreciation for our state's food and fiber production, the people involved with the various stages of that production, and the industry's statewide economic impact. In this session we will look at the numerous FREE lessons and activities that align with the Science essential standards, including how to start a strawberry garden project. Growing a strawberry garden at your school provides students with a hands-on space to explore the life cycle of a plant and an understanding of cultivating food. Gardens can foster life skills like critical-thinking, problem solving, responsibility, communication and positive self-esteem, as well as, real-life application of writing and reading skills. If you have questions, contact Carol Bennett at cbennett@wresa.org or 828.418.0011, ext. 17.  Participants will receive a certificate for 5 contact hours.

Sheila Byrd Carmichael, Project Coordinator; Lead Curriculum Writer, Grades 9-12. Sheila Byrd Carmichael was a high school English teacher in D.C. Public Schools, in Japanese public schools, and in an International Baccalaureate Programme in Italy. She is currently an education policy consultant and assists local, national, and international organizations with education policy research and reform initiatives. She has worked with over a dozen states on the development, review, and implementation of their K-12 academic standards, curricula, and assessments. In 2000, Ms. Carmichael launched the American Diploma Project (ADP) under the sponsorship of Achieve, Inc., The Education Trust, and The Thomas B. Fordham Foundation. The ADP established college- and career-ready benchmarks that were used in over thirty states to align K-12 expectations with those of employers and postsecondary institutions. From 1996 to 1998, Ms. Carmichael was the deputy director of California’s Academic Standards Commission, established to develop academic standards for the state’s K-12 public schools. She is a coauthor of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute’s 2009 report, Stars by Which to Navigate?, its 2007 report, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate: Do They Deserve Gold Star Status?, and numerous other policy research reports. She was a member the English Language Arts Feedback Group for the Common Core State Standards Initiative. She is a trustee of the Capital City Public Charter School in Washington, D.C.. Ms. Carmichael holds a B.A. from Mount Holyoke College and a master’s degree from St. John’s College, Annapolis.

Lorraine Griffith, Lead Curriculum Writer, Grades K-3. Lorraine Griffith is a fifth-grade teacher at West Buncombe Elementary School in Asheville, North Carolina. Early in Ms. Griffith's twenty-one year career, she realized she wanted to teach more than colors and transportation to Kindergarteners, so she attended the first Core Knowledge National Conference and was driven to make her school one of the first Core Knowledge schools in North Carolina. Ms. Griffith worked with others to blend the content-specific knowledge in the Core Knowledge Sequence with the broad North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Enveloped by the excitement of learning, Ms. Griffith became a National Core Knowledge consultant. During her summers away from the classroom, she traveled to schools across the country leading workshops that taught teachers how to write creative units that merge rich content with literature. Ms. Griffith has written reader's theater scripts for the Core Knowledge Foundation, taught workshops at Core Knowledge conventions, and co-created "Toolkit Workshops" for teachers of Core Knowledge in Atlanta, Georgia. She is the coauthor (with Dr. Tim Rasinski) of eleven books that encourage children to voice the words of famous speeches, song lyrics, and poetry.

Some teachers "teach to the middle" and hope for the best, or they struggle to diversify their instruction. Teaching the new common core standards while struggling to tailor instruction for individual student needs can be a daunting task for even the most gifted teacher. This session will show you how to provide the right level of challenge for gifted students, for students who lag far behind grade level, and for everyone in between. You will learn strategies to deliver instruction in ways that meet the needs of auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners. You will learn to engage students by tapping into their personal interests. Differentiating instruction—differentiating content, process, and products—requires teachers to be crystal clear about what they are trying to teach. Teachers can accomplish this by using a range of  strategies such as cooperative learning, multi-age grouping, stations, compacting, agendas, addressing multiple intelligences, and tiered activities-where the teacher keeps the concepts and skills the same for all students but provides routes of access that vary in terms of complexity, abstractness, and open-endedness (Tomlinson, ASCD, 2000). If you have questions, contact Carol Bennett at cbennett@wresa.org or 828.418.0011, ext. 17.  Participants will receive a certificate for 5 contact hours.

Feel like you don’t have time to teach science. Let us help! Join us for a day where we investigate forces and motion (from 5th grade NCSOS/NES) with active investigations that weave history, math, reading, writing and fun into lessons! Research shows students learn more when concepts are not taught in isolation. The more connections a teacher helps students make to a topic, then the more connections students make in their brain. Come learn to “weave” and watch students achieve!

This workshop is appropriate for elementary and middle school teachers. The example lessons we will use are from 5th grade. Michelle Benigno and Carol Bennett will be presenting. If you have questions contact Carol Bennett cbennett@wresa.org or 828.418.0011, ext. 17. Participants will receive a certificate for 5 contact hours.

This online book study class will explore Eric Jenson's book Tools for Engagement: Managing Emotional States for Learner Success. This time-tested book outlines numerous practical techniques and activities that teacher's can use to produce deeper learning engagement in their classrooms. Based on working with student states, the book is set up according to the different states a teacher would want to achieve or modify in the classroom, depending on the type of learning being pursued. For each state it explains what the state is, why it is important, how long it lasts, what brain activity is involved, which body language is associated with the state, what foods affect it, what music affects or contributes to the state, and instructional strategies to implement for each state. This book study is a good prerequisite to Eric Jensen's "Teaching with the Brain in Mind" workshop which will be offered on March 29, 2012 at the WRESA (YES! Eric Jensen is coming to the WRESA!). The flexible format of this online class will allow participants to read and respond within their own schedule. If you have questions, contact Carol Bennett at cbennett@wresa.org or 828.418.0011, ext. 17.  Participants will receive a certificate for 10 contact hours for successful completion of the book study assignments.

This seven week book study will explore the powerful idea of Mindsets. The author will explain that it is not just our abilities and talents that bring us success, but how they can sometimes stand in the way of it. Why praising brains and talents doesn’t foster self-esteem and accomplishments but jeopardizes them and how with the right mindset we can motivate our students and help them improve in school as well as reach their goals. We will learn how to teach a very simple idea that can change the way our students view themselves and how they view their success. The participants will need to purchase the book prior to the start of class. April Spencer will lead this book discussion.  Participants will receive a certificate for 10 contact hours and are expected to read and respond to each other each week. If you have questions, contact her at 828.418.0011, ext. 20 or aspencer@wresa.org.
